My work is focused on the landscape, primarily the Maine landscape which has been my home for 24 years. I am drawn to high horizons, dramatic scale, and perspectives that involve the viewer from a low vantage point. I strive for brilliant color and simple shapes in my work.
Pastel has been my primary medium for its immediacy, buttery texture, and delicious color. I am finding that a limited palette intensifies the vibrancy of this color, and further helps to express scale and texture in a cohesive way. In the last year, I have transitioned to oil painting pursuing the alla prima method for that same immediacy that satisfied me so in pastel painting.
I also work in monotype, using a gelatin plate. I prefer the gelatin because its flexibility enables even the most subtle of textures to register, and these textures are easily transferred without a press. The monotype process is very liberating, allowing me to experiment widely with color and texture without a preconceived idea. Every print is a wonderful surprise.
