Elements of nature have always been the starting point for my work. I am drawn to the dramatic verticals of backlit trees and deep forest paths. In the last year I have been focused on simplifying these elements toward abstraction, making color my primary language, pushing it to extremes to celebrate the rich sensuality of landscape. I strive to allow the work to evolve without intention, simply enjoying the physicality of the paint and responding to what is on the canvas. Sometimes a piece will complete itself in one sitting, while others may sit awhile waiting for my response.
I’ve had a long love affair with the turn-of-the-century colorists and the post-war expressionist painters, and have been most influenced by the color sensibiities of Henri Matisse, Joan Mitchell and Emily Mason. During this past year of intensive studio practice my own voice has emerged.
